Marie Curie developed a portable X-ray machine to be used during WWI. She won two Nobel Prizes for her work with radiation, and all of her clothing and other items still have to be contained in lead boxes today, because they are radioactive. She died of leukemia at age 66, and shortly afterward, her daughter and her daughter’s husband won a Nobel prize for their discovery of artificial radiation.
